"SERMONS FROM THE HEART" - with Rev. David L Whittaker DECEMBER BIRTHDAYS

DECEMBER BIRTHDAYS

Rev DL Whittaker, Washington

December is always one of the busiest months of the whole year, when everyone seems to be in a great rush, stores are overflowing with people, no place to park, generally cold, and everyone seems to have a holiday headache.  Some people can't wait for the time to arrive, so they start shopping early and have everything wrapped and labeled ahead of time.  I always talk about doing that, but at 65, I still haven't done it, and probably never will.  After all, why change at this late date.

Birthdays are wonderful. I just celebrated one recently and it was the best ever.  We get to have a party, sometimes, we get gifts; this year I got money.  I wonder, just how important birthdays are.  Would they be important and joyful if we never had a card, a greeting, a good meal, a party, etc?  What would we feel like, if we were just ignored?  We all know people who have lost loved ones at birthday time, people who have no family at all, so birthdays just sort of ease their way by us and we don't have to think about it too much.  Wouldn't it be great if we could just forget all the stuff and concentrate on something else.

Many of you out there, would rather die than to think of getting older, because aging is not the most pleasant of thoughts, what with so much disease and illness, poverty and other things, like unemployment, etc., but laying aside all these things which seem so unpleasant, let's turn aside a bit and remember whose birthday we celebrate in December.

Let’s turn our thoughts to another birthday… the birthday of one of the greatest Kings ever to walk the face of the earth, Jesus.  None of us can say we started our earthly life in a stable, God forbid.  None of us can say that our first bed was made of straw, and had animals around us, God forbid that also.  But that is how God chose to introduce His son to us. An identity that would follow throughout all the generations of time, to teach us of humble beginnings. No television gave an announcement, no newspaper heralded His coming, just a band of heavenly angels to come as a choir and announce to some lowly shepherds out in a field.

Folks! What would you give the King for His birthday?

He doesn't have to worry about aging, He never grows old, and when we get to where He is, we won't either. You can't wrap the gift He wants most, because wrapping wouldn't be proper. He wants you, just as you are - for his gift.  This is one He can enjoy all of eternity, making transformations to fit His need.  Think about it, and let the celebration begin.  You won't be sorry. Not for one minute.

Merry Christmas everyone, and Happy Birthday King Jesus.

David Whittaker
